English Language Arts 6

This course aligns with the learning outcomes for:

BRITISH COLUMBIA

English Language Arts 6 is a course that enhances students’ reading and writing skills, helps them to discern messages they receive in the media, and supports them in developing their oral language skills. The central question is, “What is beauty?” Carefully curated literature, including a novel study of Wonder, will give students opportunities to examine this question from many angles, all while learning foundational language skills. Students will also read short stories, picture books, advertisements, news articles, and poems that centre around the theme of beauty.

Cultural messages about beauty, however, can have a negative impact on people’s self-esteem. Through this course, students are encouraged to be discerning about the messages that they are receiving about beauty, questioning them and scrutinizing them, hopefully growing in their ability to see themselves as beautiful, just the way they are.

Besides studying novels, short stories, and poems about beauty, students will also have the opportunity to look for beauty in the world around them, taking photographs as part of a Photo Journal project. The goal for this project is that students will grow in their presentation abilities, but also in their ability to recognize and appreciate the beauty that is all around them.

The StudyForge Difference

StudyForge ELA 6 can be taught in an online asynchronous, online synchronous, hybrid, or face-to-face format. The course is designed to provide foundational reading and writing skills to students in ways that are engaging, fun, and useful. Key skills and grammar concepts are taught using humorous interactive videos, practiced through video games, and applied in meaningful writing assignments. Vocabulary and reading comprehension skills are built with interactive activities. Literature units are enhanced with beautiful original artwork.
