English Language Arts 5 is a course in which students will develop their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in an engaging, joyful way. The central question of the course is, “What is love?” Students are invited to wrestle with their understanding of love and encouraged to recognize the powerful ways that love shapes their lives and the world. Carefully curated literature, including a novel study of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, will give students opportunities to examine this question from many angles, all while learning foundational language skills.

Besides studying novels, short stories, and poems about love, students will also have the chance to look at more personal stories about love, either in their own lives or in the lives of people around them. Some of these stories might be hard, while others may be joyful and fulfilling. Regardless, students will grow in their storytelling abilities, guided through step-by-step processes in order to bring these stories to life. Hopefully, writing stories about the people, places, things, or animals that they love will help students to care about them even more.
